Crest
Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
To marvel at an infinite horizon, to get goosebumps as one’s gaze stares into emptiness, to feel the weight of history - there are just some of the unforgettable experiences which can be enjoyed at the top of Crest Tower, the tallest keep in France, in the centre of the Drôme Valley. This vestige of a Middle Age fortress proudly overlooks the town from its height of 52 metres. ©FlorentDebaud
The town of Crest is set in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Here, sunshine, charming streets, natural riches, and year-long festivals evoke the sweetness of life of Southern France. The only vestige of Crest’s medieval history, a tower stands between the hills of the Diois, the Vercors, and the Ardèche regions, the remains of the 4th century fortress. Majestic as night falls, it has been opened to abseiling. Racing down 900 years of history in a minute is sure to summon powerful emotions. But breathtaking landscape can also be admired from its three floors. The Drome Valley’s sublime landscapes are an invitation to deep contemplation. Below, the Drome, one of Europe’s last natural rivers, offers a gentler approach to Crest and its environment, kayaking through clear waters. At the gateway to the Vercors natural park, Crest offers a real breath of pure air, imbued with nature, regional treasures, and thrilling experiences. Crest is well worth the detour!
